What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment: The Complete Checklist

A little prep makes a big difference. Walk in with these in hand and we'll have everything we need to file an accurate return — and get you any refund as quickly as possible.

1. Personal information

  • Photo ID for you (and your spouse, if filing jointly)
  • Social Security numbers or ITINs for everyone on the return, including dependents
  • Last year's tax return (especially helpful if you're new to us)
  • Bank account & routing number for direct deposit

2. Income documents

  • W-2s from every employer
  • 1099s — for contract work (1099-NEC), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), retirement (1099-R), and more
  • Self-employment / business income records
  • Rental, investment, or sale-of-property records
  • Unemployment, Social Security, or other government income

3. Deduction & credit documents

  • Mortgage interest (1098) and property tax statements
  • Charitable donation receipts
  • Medical and dental expense totals
  • Childcare costs and the provider's tax ID
  • Education expenses (1098-T) and student loan interest (1098-E)
  • Retirement and HSA contribution records
  • Energy-efficient home improvement receipts

4. For business owners & the self-employed

  • Income and expense totals (your bookkeeping records)
  • Mileage log and home-office details
  • Equipment purchases and asset records
  • Estimated tax payments you've already made
First responder or military? Bring your service ID — your 10% discount is our way of saying thank you.

Not sure if something matters?

Bring it anyway. It's always better to have a document we don't need than to discover later that we're missing one. When in doubt, throw it in the folder.
